Vladimir Vladimirovich Nabokov nasceu em 10 de abril de 1899, em uma rica família liberal russa em São Petersburgo. Seu pai era um proeminente advogado e político liberal. A infância de Nabokov foi passada em um ambiente cosmopolita, onde ele aprendeu inglês e francês antes mesmo do russo. A Revolução Russa de 1917 forçou a família a fugir, e Nabokov nunca mais voltaria à sua terra natal. Ele estudou filologia eslava e românica na Universidade de Cambridge, onde publicou seus primeiros poemas em russo.
Nabokov viveu em Berlim por muitos anos, onde se estabeleceu como um escritor em língua russa sob o pseudônimo de 'Sirius'. Foi durante este período que ele conheceu e se casou com Véra Slonim, que se tornaria sua colaboradora mais dedicada e sua musa. Com a ascensão do nazismo, os Nabokov fugiram para Paris e, em 1940, emigraram para os Estados Unidos. Nos EUA, Nabokov ensinou literatura russa e comparada em várias universidades, incluindo Wellesley e Cornell. Ele também traduziu 'Eugene Onegin' de Pushkin para o inglês, com extensas notas que revelam seu profundo conhecimento da literatura russa. Após a morte de sua esposa Véra em 1978, Nabokov retornou à Suíça, onde passou os últimos anos de sua vida. Ele morreu em Montreux em 1977, deixando um legado como um dos grandes estilistas da literatura do século XX, conhecido por sua inteligência aguçada, humor e a profunda exploração da memória, da arte e da natureza da realidade.
