Quando o êxtase é inoportuno
todo enlevo logo termina.
Cante: quem sabe -
se fim ou início do vôo
para a gaivota em pouso?
Coração, aquiete-se.
Diga: dinheiro há, mas com ferrugem;
diga: luar não é propício para fugas.
É a cor no baixo firmamento
espargindo cores largas
ou, em minha gravata, o vento.
Saiba em espanto como
se toma a própria loucura
nas mãos
e a guarda.

When ecstasy is inconvenient
Lorine Niedecker
Feign a great calm;
all gay transport soon ends.
Chant: who knows—
flight's end or flight's beginning
for the resting gull?
Heart, be still.
Say there is money but it rusted;
say the time of moon is not right for escape.
It's the color in the lower sky
too broadly suffused,
or the wind in my tie.
Know amazedly how
often one takes his madness
into his own hands
and keeps it.
Poema
mas totem nenhum diferencia a tribo Niedecker
das outras; a cada sete dias vão às águas:
veneram o sol; temem a chuva e, dos vizinhos, os olhos;
erguem aos céus as mãos desde o solo
e penduram ou despencam pela brancura de seu todo.
(tradução de Ricardo Domeneck)

Poem
Lorine Niedecker
The clothesline post is set
yet no totem-carvings distinguish the Niedecker tribe
from the rest; every seventh day they wash:
worship sun; fear rain, their neighbors' eyes;
raise their hands from ground to sky,
and hang or fall by the whiteness of their all.
