Yehuda Amichai nasceu em Würzburg, Alemanha, em 1924, em uma família judia ortodoxa. Com a ascensão nazista ao poder, a família de Amichai emigra para a Palestina. O poeta adolescente tinha 12 anos. Em 1936, a família fixa residência em Jerusalém, que Yehuda Amichai passaria a chamar de "minha cidade". Durante a segunda Guerra, Amichai luta com os ingleses na Brigada Judia do Exército Britânico. No entanto, ao voltar para a Palestina passa então a lutar contra os britânicos na Guerra de Independência de 1948. Após a Guerra, o poeta estuda Literatura Hebraica na Universidade de Jerusalém e passa a lecionar mais tarde em Haifa.
 
Yehuda Amichai é considerado um dos primeiros a usar a linguagem hebraica coloquial em poesia, e sua estreia viria em 1955, com o volume intitulado (algo como)Agora e em Outros Dias. Advogando a divisão pacífica da terra, ele seria convocado ainda para duas guerras: A Guerra do Sinai (1956) e a Guerra de Yom Kippur (1973). Talvez o mais famoso poeta israelense moderno, publicou mais de 15 livros. O poeta morreu de câncer em 2000, celebrado como um dos maiores autores do país.
