Anecdote of the Jar

I placed a jar in Tennessee,

And round it was, upon a hill.

It made the slovenly wilderness

Surround that hill.

The wilderness rose up to it,

And sprawled around, no longer wild.

The jar was round upon the ground

And tall and of a port in air.

It took dominion everywhere.

The jar was gray and bare.

It did not give of bird or bush,

Like nothing else in Tennessee.

Chame o enrolador de grandes charutos,
Aquele dobrado, e diga-lhe que bata
Os coalhos concupiscentes nas xícaras da cozinha.
Que as gurias zaranzem nos vestidos
Habituais, e os rapazes tragam flores
Em cartuchos de jornais do mês passados.
Que ser seja o final de parecer.
Só há um rei e esse é o rei do sorvete.

Tire da cômoda de pinho,
Que já perdeu três puxadores de vidro, aquele lençol
Que ela bordou um dia com caudas de pavão
E estenda-o de modo a cobrir-lhe o rosto.
Se um pé unhudo sair para fora, é
Para mostrar como ela está fria, como está muda.
Que a lâmpada afixe o seu filete.
Só há um rei e este é o rei do sorvete.

A POESIA É UMA FORÇA DESTRUTIVA

Isto é que é a miséria,
Nada Ter no coração.
É Ter ou nada.

É uma coisa Ter,
Um leão, um boi no seu peito,
Senti-la respirando ali.

Corazón, cachorro bravo,
Bezerro, urso de pernas tortas,
Ele prova seu sangue, não cospe.

É como um homem
No corpo de uma fera violenta.
São seus os músculos dela...

O leão dorme ao sol.
O nariz entre as patas.
Ela pode matar um homem.

O HOMEM DA NEVE

É preciso uma mente de inverno
Para olhar a geada e os ramos
Dos pinheiros cobertos pela nevada

E há muito tempo fazer frio
Para observar os zimbros arrepiados de gelo,
Os abetos ásperos no brilho distante

Do sol de janeiro; e não pensar
Em qualquer miséria no som do vento,
No som de umas poucas folhas

Que é o som da terra
Cheia do mesmo vento
Que sopra no mesmo lugar vazio

Para alguém que escuta, escuta na neve,
E, ausente, observa
Nada que não está lá e o nada que é.

Nós vivemos numa constelação

E não num mundo uno, nas coisas ditas

pensadores sem pensamentos últimos
Num cosmos sempre e sempre incipiente,
Como, ao se subir uma montanha,
Vermont reúne seus vários pedaços.
