A velada Melancolia tem o seu santuário.
'Beleza é verdade, verdade é
o que conheceis sobre a Terra, e é tudo o que precisais conhecer.
No mesmo templo do deleite
Oh, se eu ao menos
Toda a beleza é alegria
Eu de nada tenho certeza,
'Beleza é verdade, verdade é
O prazer visita-nos muitas vezes;
Se a poesia não surgir
SONETO ESCRITO EM REPULSA
Os sinos dobram com melancolia
Chamando o povo para as devoções,
Outras tristezas, outras contrições,
E o hórrido sermão que o padre esfia.
Sem dúvida que os homens por magia
Sinistra estão vencidos: se as visões
Ao canto do seu lar ou as canções
Pagãs els trocam por tal fantasia.
E dobram, dobram... Mas não me estremece
Funéreo calafrio, pois que os sei
Morrendo aos poucos qual candeia finda.
São els quem chora a morte que os empece.
Há-de florir de novo a humana grei
Em pura glória mais eterna ainda.
