Frequentou o Trinity College, Dublin, onde conheceu o escritor Jonathan Swift. Suas peças mais famosas incluem 'The Old Bachelor' (1693), 'The Double Dealer' (1693) e 'Love for Love' (1695). A escrita de Congreve é caracterizada por diálogos aguçados, personagens complexos e uma exploração das complexidades do amor e do casamento. Ele também escreveu poesia e um romance inacabado. Sua obra teve uma influência significativa no desenvolvimento do drama inglês. William Congreve faleceu em 19 de janeiro de 1729.
