Sir Walter Scott nasceu em Edimburgo, Escócia. Desde cedo, demonstrou grande interesse pela história e pelas baladas populares escocesas. Após estudar direito, tornou-se advogado, mas sua paixão pela escrita logo o dominou. Sua carreira literária decolou com a publicação de poemas como "The Lay of the Last Minstrel" e "Marmion". No entanto, foi com o romance "Waverley" que Scott inaugurou o gênero do romance histórico, seguido por obras-primas como "Ivanhoe", "Rob Roy" e "Kenilworth". Seus romances são conhecidos pela reconstituição detalhada de períodos históricos, personagens memoráveis e tramas envolventes. Scott também atuou como advogado e administrador, e foi um colecionador de antiguidades escocesas. Ele desempenhou um papel significativo na recuperação e preservação das joias da coroa escocesa. Scott faleceu em Abbotsford, Escócia, em 1832, deixando um legado literário vasto e influente.
