Thomas More (1478-1535) foi uma figura central do Renascimento inglês. Advogado, juiz, e depois Lorde Chanceler da Inglaterra, More era um intelectual respeitado e amigo próximo de Erasmo de Roterdão. Sua obra mais célebre, 'Utopia' (1516), cunhou o termo e apresentou uma visão crítica das sociedades europeias através da descrição de uma ilha imaginária com um sistema político e social perfeito. Sua fé católica inabalável o colocou em conflito com o Rei Henrique VIII quando este rompeu com a Igreja Católica Romana. A recusa de More em jurar lealdade ao rei como chefe supremo da Igreja da Inglaterra levou à sua prisão e subsequente decapitação na Torre de Londres, sendo canonizado pela Igreja Católica como São Tomás More.
