I am alive—I guess
Emily Dickinson
I am aliveâI guess
470
I am aliveâI guessâ
The Branches on my Hand
Are full of Morning Gloryâ
And at my finger's endâ
The Carmineâtingles warmâ
And if I hold a Glass
Across my Mouthâit blurs itâ
Physician'sâproof of Breathâ
I am aliveâbecause
I am not in a Roomâ
The ParlorâCommonlyâit isâ
So Visitors may comeâ
And leanâand view it sidewiseâ
And add "How coldâit grew"â
And "Was it consciousâwhen it stepped
In Immortality?"
I am aliveâbecause
I do not own a Houseâ
Entitled to myselfâpreciseâ
And fitting no one elseâ
And marked my Girlhood's nameâ
So Visitors may know
Which Door is mineâand not
