Shota Rustaveli (c. 1160 - c. 1220) was a Georgian poet of the 12th century, best known as the author of the Georgian national epic 'The Knight in the Panther's Skin'. His work is considered a pinnacle of medieval Georgian literature and a masterpiece of world poetry.

Shota Rustaveli was born around 1160 in a region of the Kingdom of Georgia, possibly Mestia or Rustavi. He served as treasurer under Queen Tamar, a golden age for Georgia. 'The Knight in the Panther's Skin', his only known work, is a long chivalric poem celebrating friendship, love, and loyalty. The poem reflects the ideals of the Georgian Renaissance and is a foundational read for Georgians. Rustaveli is believed to have died around 1220, possibly in Jerusalem, where some rumors say he became a monk. His contribution to Georgian literature is immense, and he remains a revered national figure.
