The moving moon went up the sky, And nowhere did abide; Softly she was going up, And a star or two beside.
The Night-mare LIFE-IN-DEATH was she,
The one red leaf, the last of its clan, That dances as often as dance it can.
The primary imagination I hold to be the living Power and prime Agent of all human Perception, and as a repetition in the finite mind of the eternal act of creation in the infinite I AM.
The ship was cheered, the harbor cleared, Merrily did we drop Below the kirk, below the hill, Below the lighthouse top.
The sun’s rim dips, the stars rush out: At one stride comes the dark; With far-heard whisper o’er the sea Off shot the specter bark.
The Sun’s rim dips; the stars rush out;
The very deep did rot: O Christ!
The very deep did rot: O Christ! That ever this should be! Yea, slimy things did crawl with legs Upon the slimy sea.
