Bio
Born in Cynoscephalae, Boeotia, Pindar is famous for his "epinikia", odes composed to celebrate the winners of the Panhellenic Games. These odes were not mere accounts of athletic victories, but complex compositions that intertwined the athlete's feat with myths, genealogies, and moral lessons. His work is marked by a grand style, rich language, and a deep sense of religiosity and Greek patriotism. Although he traveled and received commissions from many city-states, Pindar maintained a strong bond with his homeland. His influence on Western poetry is immense, inspiring poets from Classical Antiquity to the present day. He probably died in Argos.
