Mongane Wally Serote
Mongane Wally Serote (nascido em 1944) é um poeta, escritor e ativista sul-africano. Ele é uma figura central na literatura sul-africana, especialmente conhecido por sua poesia que reflete as lutas e esperanças durante o período do apartheid.
Início de Vida e Educação
Serote nasceu em Sophiatown, Joanesburgo. Ele estudou na Universidade de Columbia, nos Estados Unidos, onde obteve um mestrado em Belas Artes. Sua educação nos EUA o expôs a diferentes movimentos literários e políticos, influenciando sua própria voz artística.
Carreira Literária
A poesia de Serote é caracterizada por sua intensidade emocional, imagens vívidas e um forte senso de identidade africana. Seus poemas frequentemente exploram temas como:
- O sofrimento e a dignidade do povo negro sob o apartheid.
- A resistência contra a opressão e a busca pela libertação.

Além de sua carreira literária, Serote foi um ativo participante no movimento anti-apartheid. Ele foi um dos fundadores do Congress of South African Writers (COSAW) e esteve envolvido em diversas organizações culturais e políticas que visavam desmantelar o regime do apartheid. Sua arte foi uma ferramenta de conscientização e mobilização.

Após o fim do apartheid, Serote serviu como diplomata sul-africano, incluindo um período como embaixador em Cuba.
