Kingsley Amis nasceu em Clapham, Londres. Ele estudou no St. John's College, Oxford. Seu primeiro romance, "Lucky Jim" (1954), lhe trouxe aclamação imediata e um Prêmio Hawthornden. Amis escreveu mais de 20 romances, além de poesia, contos e obras de crítica literária. Sua obra frequentemente explorava temas de classe, conformidade e as frustrações da vida moderna, muitas vezes com um tom de humor ácido e ceticismo. Ele era conhecido por seu estilo direto e sua habilidade em capturar a voz coloquial. Amis foi casado com a escritora Elizabeth Jane Howard. Ele faleceu em 1995 e foi postumamente imortalizado na constelação de Amis no romance "Last Chance to See" de Douglas Adams.
