José Gorostiza was a prominent Mexican poet, essayist, and diplomat, whose work left an indelible mark on his country's literature. Born in Villahermosa, Tabasco, on November 10, 1901, Gorostiza emerged as a singular voice on the 20th-century literary scene. His intellectual formation was shaped by a deep interest in philosophy and literature, which is reflected in his dense and reflective poetry. Gorostiza is widely recognized for his poetic collection "Epitalamio del insomne," which demonstrates his mastery of language and his ability to move between the existential and the lyrical. He was also a central figure in the literary circle "Contemporáneos," a group of intellectuals who sought to renew Mexican culture through dialogue with international avant-gardes. Parallel to his literary career, Gorostiza dedicated himself to diplomacy, serving Mexico in embassies and consulates in various countries, which provided him with a cosmopolitan perspective. His poetry is characterized by introspection, the exploration of the human condition, the incessant search for meaning, and the confrontation with mortality. Gorostiza's work is an invitation to reflect on the great themes of existence, love, solitude, and time. He passed away in 1972, leaving a literary legacy that continues to inspire and challenge readers and scholars.
