Poems List
When Night is almost done
347
When Night is almost done-
And Sunrise grows so near
That we can touch the SpacesIt's
time to smooth the Hair-
And get the Dimples ready-
And wonder we could care
For that old-faded Midnight-
That frightened-but an Hour-
Before I got my eye put out
327
Before I got my eye put out
I liked as well to see-
As other Creatures, that have Eyes
And know no other way-
But were it told to me-Today-
That I might have the sky
For mine-I tell you that my Heart
Would split, for size of me-
The Meadows-mine-
The Mountains-mine-
All Forests-Stintless Stars-
As much of Noon as I could take
Between my finite eyes-
The Motions of the Dipping Birds-
The Morning's Amber Road-
For mine-to look at when I liked-
The News would strike me dead-
So safer-guess-with just my soul
Upon the Window pane-
Where other Creatures put their eyesIncautious-
of the Sun-
When I was small, a Woman died
596
When I was small, a Woman diedToday-
her Only Boy
Went up from the Potomac-
His face all Victory
To look at her-How slowly
The Seasons must have turned
Till Bullets clipt an Angle
And He passed quickly round-
If pride shall be in Paradise-
Ourself cannot decide-
Of their imperial Conduct-
No person testified-
But, proud in Apparition-
That Woman and her Boy
Pass back and forth, before my Brain
As even in the sky
I'm confident that Bravoes-
Perpetual break abroad
For Braveries, remote as this
In Scarlet Maryland-
Bee! I'm expecting you!
1035
Bee! I'm expecting you!
Was saying Yesterday
To Somebody you know
That you were due-
The Frogs got Home last Week-
Are settled, and at work-
Birds, mostly back-
The Clover warm and thick
You'll get my Letter by
The seventeenth; Reply
Or better, be with me-
Yours, Fly.
Because the Bee may blameless hum
869
Because the Bee may blameless hum
For Thee a Bee do I become
List even unto Me.
Because the Flowers unafraid
May lift a look on thine, a Maid
Alway a Flower would be.
Nor Robins, Robins need not hide
When Thou upon their Crypts intrude
So Wings bestow on Me
Or Petals, or a Dower of Buzz
That Bee to ride, or Flower of Furze
I that way worship Thee.
When I have seen the Sun emerge
888
When I have seen the Sun emerge
From His amazing House-
And leave a Day at every Door
A Deed, in every place-
Without the incident of Fame
Or accident of Noise-
The Earth has seemed to me a Drum,
Pursued of little Boys
When Diamonds are a Legend
397
When Diamonds are a Legend,
And Diadems-a Tale-
I Brooch and Earrings for Myself,
Do sow, and Raise for sale-
And tho' I'm scarce accounted,
My Art, a Summer Day-had PatronsOnce-
it was a Queen-
And once-a Butterfly-
Beauty-be not caused-It Is
516
Beauty-be not caused-It Is-
Chase it, and it ceases-
Chase it not, and it abides-
Overtake the Creases
In the Meadow-when the Wind
Runs his fingers thro' it-
Deity will see to it
That You never do it-
Banish Air from Air
854
Banish Air from Air-
Divide Light if you dareThey'll
meet
While Cubes in a Drop
Or Pellets of Shape
Fit
Films cannot annul
Odors return whole
Force Flame
And with a Blonde push
Over your impotence
Flits Steam.
What would I give to see his face?
247
What would I give to see his face?
I'd give-I'd give my life-of course-
But that is not enough!
Stop just a minute-let me think!
I'd give my biggest Bobolink!
That makes two-Him-and Life!
You know who "June" isI'd
give her-
Roses a day from Zanzibar-
And Lily tubes-like WellsBees-
by the furlong-
Straits of Blue
Navies of Butterflies-sailed thro'-
And dappled Cowslip Dells-
Then I have "shares" in Primrose "Banks"-
Daffodil Dowries-spicy "Stocks"Dominions-
broad as Dew-
Bags of Doublons-adventurous Bees
Brought me-from firmamental seas-
And Purple-from Peru
Now-have I bought it"
Shylock"? Say!
Sign me the Bond!
"I vow to pay
To Her-who pledges this-
One hour-of her Sovereign's face"!
Ecstatic Contract!
Niggard Grace!
My Kingdom's worth of Bliss!
