Escaping backward to perceive
867
Escaping backward to perceive
The Sea upon our place-
Escaping forward, to confront
His glittering Embrace-
Retreating up, a Billow's height
Retreating blinded down
Our undermining feet to meet
Instructs to the Divine.
Empty my Heart, of Thee
587
Empty my Heart, of Thee-
Its single Artery-
Begin, and leave Thee out-
Simply Extinction's Date-
Much Billow hath the Sea-
One Baltic-They-
Subtract Thyself, in play,
And not enough of me
Is left-to put away"
Myself" meanth Thee-
Erase the Root-no TreeThee-
then-no me-
The Heavens strippedEternity's
vast pocket, picked-
Elysium is as far as to
Elysium is as far as to
The very nearest Room
If in that Room a Friend await
Felicity or Doom--
What fortitude the Soul contains
That it can so endure
The accent of a coming Foot--
The opening of a Door--
Each Scar I'll keep for Him
877
Each Scar I'll keep for Him
Instead I'll say of Gem
In His long Absence worn
A Costlier one
But every Tear I bore
Were He to count them o'er
His own would fall so more
I'll mis sum them.
Dying! To be afraid of thee
831
Dying! To be afraid of thee
One must to thine Artillery
Have left exposed a Friend-
Than thine old Arrow is a Shot
Delivered straighter to the Heart
The leaving Love behind.
Not for itself, the Dust is shy,
But, enemy, Beloved be
Thy Batteries divorce.
Fight sternly in a Dying eye
Two Armies, Love and Certainty
And Love and the Reverse.
Dying (I heard a fly buzz when I died)
I heard a fly buzz when I died;
The stillness round my form
Was like the stillness in the air
Between the heaves of storm.
The eyes beside had wrung them dry,
And breaths were gathering sure
For that last onset, when the king
Be witnessed in his power.
I willed my keepsakes, signed away
What portion of me I
Could make assignable, -- and then
There interposed a fly,
With blue, uncertain, stumbling buzz,
Between the light and me;
And then the windows failed, and then
I could not see to see.
Dropped into the Ether Acre
665
Dropped into the Ether Acre-
Wearing the Sod Gown-
Bonnet of Everlasting LacesBrooch-
frozen on-
Horses of Blonde-and Coach of Silver-
Baggage a strapped Pearl-
Journey of Down-and Whip of Diamond-
Riding to meet the Earl-
Drama's Vitallest Expression is the Common Day
741
Drama's Vitallest Expression is the Common Day
That arise and set about Us-
Other Tragedy
Perish in the RecitationThis-
the best enact
When the Audience is scattered
And the Boxes shut
"Hamlet" to Himself were Hamlet-
Had not Shakespeare wrote-
Though the "Romeo" left no Record
Of his Juliet,
It were infinite enacted
In the Human Heart-
Only Theatre recorded
Owner cannot shut-
Doubt Me! My Dim Companion!
275
Doubt Me! My Dim Companion!
Why, God, would be content
With but a fraction of the Life-
Poured thee, without a stint-
The whole of me-forever-
What more the Woman can,
Say quick, that I may dower thee
With last Delight I own!
It cannot be my Spirit-
For that was thine, before-
I ceded all of Dust I knew-
What Opulence the more
Had I-a freckled Maiden,
Whose farthest of Degree,
Was-that she might-
Some distant Heaven,
Dwell timidly, with thee!
Sift her, from Brow to Barefoot!
Strain till your last Surmise-
Drop, like a Tapestry, away,
Before the Fire's Eyes-
Winnow her finest fondness-
But hallow just the snow
Intact, in Everlasting flake-
Oh, Caviler, for you!
Don't put up my Thread and Needle
617
Don't put up my Thread and NeedleI'll
begin to Sew
When the Birds begin to whistle-
Better Stitches-so-
These were bent-my sight got crooked-
When my mind-is plain
I'll do seams-a Queen's endeavor
Would not blush to own
Hems-too fine for Lady's tracing
To the sightless KnotTucks-
of dainty interspersion-
Like a dotted Dot-
Leave my Needle in the furrow-
Where I put it down-
I can make the zigzag stitches
Straight-when I am strong-
Till then-dreaming I am sewing
Fetch the seam I missedCloser-
so I-at my sleeping-
Still surmise I stitch-
