David Hume nasceu em Edimburgo e mostrou desde cedo uma inclinação para o estudo e a escrita. Sua obra mais famosa, 'Um Tratado sobre a Natureza Humana', publicada anonimamente em 1739-1740, foi inicialmente mal recebida, mas mais tarde foi reconhecida como um marco na história da filosofia. Hume também fez contribuições significativas para a economia e a história, escrevendo uma monumental 'História da Inglaterra'. Ele era conhecido por sua mente analítica e ceticismo, questionando a causalidade e a indução, e defendendo que todo conhecimento deriva da experiência sensorial. Apesar de suas contribuições intelectuais, sua carreira acadêmica enfrentou obstáculos devido às suas visões consideradas radicais para a época. Hume faleceu em Edimburgo em 1776.
