Melhor conhecido como contista, o poeta Raymond Carver nasceu em 1938, em uma pequena cidade americana chamada Clatskanie, no estado de Oregon. Sua primeira coletânea de contos,Will You Please Be Quiet, Please?, foi publicada em 1976, mas sua estréia foi como poeta, em 1968, com o livroNear Klamath. Seu livro mais conhecido éWhat We Talk About When We Talk About Love (1981), e muitos dos contos seriam adaptados pelo diretor Robert Altman no filmeShort Cuts.
