Langston Hughes nasceu no estado americano do Missouri e é o escritor, poeta e dramaturgo mais famoso do movimento modernista norte-americano conhecido comoHarlem Renaissance, que contou ainda com os autores Claude McKay, Jean Toomer, Zora Neale Hurston e James Weldon Johnson, entre outros. O movimento, que tinha como uma de suas sedes o lendário Apollo Theater, lançaria ainda a carreira musical de Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald e Sarah Vaughan.
Muito antes de Beats como Allen Ginsberg e Jack Kerouac professarem um retorno à relação saudável entre literatura e oratura, assim como Kenneth Rexroth logo antes deles, Langston Hughes já havia iniciado o processo dentro do modernismo norte-americano, sendo um dos primeiros a experimentar com o que ficaria conhecido comojazz poetry.
