Bio
Propertius was born in Assisi, Umbria, around 47 BC. His family, although not from the highest aristocracy, possessed some local influence. He moved to Rome in his youth, where he became involved with literary circles and befriended figures like Virgil and Ovid. His work, composed of four books of elegies, is largely autobiographical, focusing on his tumultuous relationship with a woman he calls "Cynthia". Propertius' elegies are characterized by their passion, jealousy, and despair, portraying love as an overwhelming and often painful force. He innovated in the elegiac form, exploring its psychological and expressive depth. Propertius' work had a significant impact on later poetry, influencing Renaissance and modern poets with its lyrical intensity and its realistic portrayal of the complexities of love.
