Jan Neruda (1834 – 1891) was a Czech writer, poet, and journalist. He is best known for his collection of short stories 'Tales of the Lesser Town' ('Povídky malostranské'), which offers a vivid and detailed portrait of life in Prague's Malá Strana district in the 19th century. Neruda was also an influential literary critic and journalist, actively participating in the Czech national revival. His work is characterized by social realism, deep psychological observation, and a lyrical style. He is considered one of the founders of modern Czech literature.
