Bio
Born in Turin, Giuseppe Baretti stood out as a prominent figure in the 18th-century Italian literary scene. His career was marked by a critical spirit and notable erudition. After settling in London, where he befriended Samuel Johnson, Baretti published his influential "Dizionario delle lingue italiana e inglese" (1760), a lexicographical work that contributed significantly to the cultural exchange between Italy and England. He was also an incisive literary critic, advocating for clarity and precision in language and criticizing the rhetorical excesses of some of his contemporaries. Baretti actively participated in the literary debates of his time, which sometimes earned him enmities, but consolidated his reputation as a combative and independent intellectual. His work, although perhaps less known today than that of other Italian authors, was fundamental for the dissemination of the Italian language and culture abroad and for the renewal of critical thought in his country.
