Baldassare Castiglione (1478-1529) was born in Casatico, near Mantua, and was a central figure in the Italian Renaissance. Educated in arts and letters, he served various Italian courts, including those of Urbino and Ferrara, and also acted as an ambassador. His most famous work, "The Book of the Courtier" (Il Cortegiano), published in 1528, describes the qualities and behavior of an ideal courtier, emphasizing elegance, moderation, knowledge, and skill in arts and arms. The work became a model of etiquette and culture for European nobility for centuries. Castiglione also wrote poetry and a treatise on the art of medal making.
